Introducing AIR-sense-IQ: a CO2 Monitor Powered by Epishine’s Organic Indoor Solar Cells

Written by Epishine | October 3, 2024

Reef IoT is excited to announce the official launch of AIR-sense-IQ, a cutting-edge photovoltaic carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor powered by Epishine’s printed solar cells. Developed as part of the ATiP project at Swansea University, AIR-sense-IQ offers an advanced solution for monitoring CO2 levels in indoor environments - without the need for external power sources or battery replacements.

By capturing energy from indoor lighting, AIR-sense-IQ is an efficient solution for maintaining optimal air quality in workspaces without needing maintenance. Reef IoT is currently in the process of spinning out from Swansea University.

AIR-sense-IQ features innovative solar technology that converts indoor light into energy, enabling continuous monitoring without the need for changing batteries or external power. AIR-sense-IQ provides live air quality readings via an advanced CO2 sensor. The device alerts users when CO2 levels become elevated, ensuring optimal air quality and increased comfort and well-being for the users of the space. When mounted on a wall, it maximizes its exposure to indoor lighting ensuring that it remains powered and operational in all standard office settings.

“We are proud to launch AIR-sense-IQ, a product that not only improves workplace air quality but also operates entirely on indoor light,” said Matt Carnie, co-founder of Reef IoT. “By integrating Epishine’s organic printed solar cells, we’ve created a device that is both highly efficient and environmentally friendly, making it easier for companies to prioritize employee well-being while reducing their energy footprint.”

Powered by Epishine’s flexible and highly efficient organic printed solar cells, AIR-sense-IQ is designed specifically to operate in low-light environments, making it an ideal solution for modern workspaces focused on sustainability.

AIR-sense-IQ will be available for purchase in mid 2025.

About Reef IoT:
Reef IoT was co-founded by Matt Carnie, Professor of Materials Science at Swansea University and Electronic Engineering PhD student, Zaid Haymoor. Reef IoT has created a versatile energy harvesting platform which is one of the most efficient available. The platform enables multifunctional and multimodal sensing and interaction capabilities without the need for hardwiring or changing batteries.

About ATiP
ATiP (Application Targeted and Integrated Photovoltaics), is a UKRI funded project, led by Swansea University. ATiP aims to advance next generation photovoltaic technologies, integrating them into applications like agri-tech, zero-carbon buildings, and IoT devices through scalable, low-cost manufacturing.

About Epishine:
Epishine is a Swedish energy impact company, reimagining the capture of light with market-leading printed organic solar cells.
Our technology captures indoor light to make electronics self-powered, making cables, disposable batteries, and unnecessary maintenance a thing of the past.
